The Samuel Waxman Institute for Aging & Cancer, an affiliate of The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research, is a first-of-its-kind organization specifically dedicated to tackling the single greatest risk factor for cancer—aging.
Accelerating discovery in this area of research is crucial. Nearly 90 percent of cancers are diagnosed in individuals over 50 years old. And as global expectancies continue to increase, both cancer incidence and mortality are expected to increase exponentially.
Yet the biology of aging remains significantly underfunded in cancer research. The Waxman Institute will address this critical gap and drive science that rethinks cancer through the lens of the aging process to understand its impact on cancer development, progression, recurrence, treatment, and prevention.
Created in collaboration with Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) and announced as part of a merger with The Mark Foundation, the Waxman Institute will build on the long-time collaborative partnership between the two organizations - one rooted in a commitment to fostering open science globally.
As part of The Mark Foundation, the Waxman Institute will benefit from The Mark Foundation's global network of cancer research experts and its innovative operating model while also drawing on SWCRF's 50-year legacy in international scientific collaboration that has advanced significant breakthroughs in cancer treatment.
